Biography:
Wenxin Wang is a professor in wound healing and a principle investigator of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). He currently works at the Charles Institute of Dermatology, University College Dublin. His scientific interests are in the areas of wound healing, gene therapy, and development of new treatments for cardiovascular and neural degenerative disease. He employs a variety of polymers for a wide range of applications, including smart polymers, dendritic polymers, new colloidal polymer particles, organic and inorganic hybrid nanomaterials, biodegradable polymers, fluorinated polymers and silicone polymers. These applications predominantly lie within the areas of tissue engineering, drug delivery, and gene therapy.
His scientific contributions and achievements, which have been widely recognized, include 3 book chapters, 14 held patents, 3 filed invention disclosure forms (IDFs), and 168 peer-reviewed scientific publications in research journals, including Nature Communications, Science Advances, JACS, Progress in Polymer Science, Angewandte Chemie, and Advanced Materials. Professor Wang has been invited 65 times as a keynote or invited speaker at international conferences and universities. He has hosted 19 conferences as a member of the advisory board, organizer, chair or convenor around the world. Professor Wang has founded two spin-out companies: Vornia Ltd. and Blafar Ltd. and he respectively takes on the roles of CSO and CEO for these institutions. Currently, he is focusing on the operation of Blafar Ltd. since the Vornia Ltd. has been purchased by Ashland Inc. Professor Wang has won the highly prestigious “SFI prize in Regenerative Medicine” in 2010 and the SFI Principle Investigator award in 2011. Professor Wang has also been selected 17 times as an expert reviewer and panel member by a variety of research councils and funding bodies, such as the Belgium Scientific Review Board at the Scientific Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) Commission, European Commission FP7 and Horizon2020 - Marie Curie Fellowship, Canada Ontario Research Fund, Romania Research Council, the Portuguese Foundation for Science FCT mission, Medical Research Council (UK) and EPSRC (UK), etc.
